Post Account Security!

I wanted to update this, we have a major problem, a problem that is literally crippling our server. Due to a lot of players lack of ability to take account security seriously, we get tons of of stolen account/item reports. This includes sharing accounts with your closest friends and even family members, yes we get family members stealing each others accounts and items all the time! So many to the point where its seriously effecting server development, not as many bugs are getting fixed, not as many new features are being made, the server is suffering due to these peoples bad choices. The reason why is because these cases absorb so much of our time and effort dealing with them, and investigating them, and at least trying to get their accounts back after a lengthy verification process. In most cases no body will get their items back though, but we usually try and find out who has their items so they get some closure to who did what, and where their mistakes were made. The reason why i try to at least do these things for players is we feel bad for them, even if they caused the situation on their self, and we dont want them to leave the server either, we want to retain these players. Though its getting to the point where its too much, and it's not fair to me, or the players who actually take account security seriously and don't share accounts. I think we may be better off just cutting or losses and not doing anything about these cases, maybe it would be better for them to take on the consequences of their actions, instead of the server taking the hit for them. If things continue the way they are, these processes will change to protect the server, and support for these cases will be become very limited or these cases may not be investigated at all, no one will even get their accounts back or know who got their stuff, in which case they may leave.

When this happens to someone they "think" they are the victim. People don't magically gain your account information, they gain it because they let them even if they dont even realize what they did that compromised their accounts security. They are not the victim, they allowed it to happen, it is always their fault, except in very extreme cases where key loggers could be involved in pc cafes, but they should already know the risk they are taking by doing that. Either you shared an account with a friend/relative, or even a buffer, and they used that information to get to your main account. Or maybe your password is just terrible, this is an example of what some people do, they will literally name their account name "adventurer" and then their password is "adventurer" as well. You should never have your account name and password the same, and they should have nothing to do with l2 at all. You could have shared an account with someone 12 months ago, and now, way later, they use that information to access your other accounts. Even if you cant think of the reason why it happened, trust us, there is a reason. We are the ones who are actually the victim here, cause we have to deal with your poor choices.

Here is what you can do to help, spread the word, and make sure everyone knows the risks of sharing accounts and having simple passwords, and take actions to help fix these vulnerabilities.

You can go to http://www.l2equanimity.com/account_manager/index.php to change your password. You should also add an email to your account! That way if you forget your password or if someone takes your account you could have a chance to get it back easier.

Think about your passwords, are they simple, are they too similar to your account name, are they too short? Well change them if that's the case.

Do other people have your account information? You are at risk then, change your password! They can steal your stuff at any time. Don't let all your work go to waste.

Especially For Cyber Cafes:

This is an issue we have had for a while now, but in order to prevent this, or to at least minimize the damage you could suffer, here are some recommendations if you play from a cyber cafe.

Check for keyloggers:
Now this is the #1 reason (besides account sharing) people get their stuff stolen or destroyed when you play from a cyber cafe and players know that you play on the same server/cyber as you do, you can google for scanners or spywares that can check if there are keyloggers running on the background, if you do find any, its better to change cyber as soon as possible since not only your game info can be in danger but also you're personal information especially if you use it for any monetary transfers and so forth.

Protect your game identity:
Don't share accounts, don't tell anyone not even your best of game-friends where you play or if you see someone in the cyber you recognize don't tell them you play on the same server and if possible change cyber cafes.

Now we realize that due to personal reason you may be force to played on cyber cafes but keep in mind that if you get your stuff stolen because you didn't do anything to protect yourself, we cant give you your items back since there is no way for us to prove it with 100% certainty that you or anyone else from the same IP address did what with whose accounts.

Post Re: CYBER CAFE PRECAUTIONS & ACCOUNT SHARING (iMPORTANT)
I wanted to add this as well when i made the first post, but i thought it would be obvious but some players don't seem to grasp the concept yet so here goes nothing.

Account sharing and bad identity protection is what leads players to getting their stuff stolen 99% of the time.

Account Sharing: protecting you account info is your responsibility not the Server's staff, we have had many cases were people lend their accounts or share info's with cousins/brothers etc, and its this same family members that leave their own family with empty accounts, when this happens the server and its staff is not responsible nor we are obligated to do a full dedicated investigation of who did it and having our staff members dealing with personal problems among players.

Downloading Beware: We have had a couple of cases were players come to us saying that a player give them a link to either our system patch or something totally unrelated to our server and the following day they log in and all their stuff is gone.

There is a reason we have both a main webpage and forum page which in both you will be able to find our official download link for our newest patch, also remember if you are having client side issues its better to contact a GM than to ask anyone ingame, a GM will be able to provide you with professional help and correct links to our patches. Some people when they see a player problems like to take advantage and they will make up a phony file with a keyloger and if you download such file then you will have problems, cause unless you have a very good antivirus that is able to detect spyware its hard to know when you have had a keyloger in one of your downloads.

We do understand that trust is a major issue for a lot of people, especially since the game itself is design to be friendly and to create trust among players, but the reality of the matter is, that you don't know who is behind that character your playing with at the end of the day, remember one thing is trust in game another is your own personal well being.

L2 Equanimity and its staff members are not responsible for missuses on your behalf about your own personal information regarding game accounts, if you suffer heavy loses because of this we will not reimburse nor we are obligated to do a full investigation that we deem not necessary because of player negligence towards protecting himself.
