If you happen to getting the message "Your protocol version is different. Please continue." when trying to log in, follow these steps, one of these could fix your problem.

- First, try the simple fix, which is by restarting your whole computer. This works more often then one might think. If it doesn't try the steps below one at a time.

- Disable your antivirus software if you have any/make an exception for your l2 folder so it doesn't scan it. Then re-download our system patch from http://www.l2equanimity.com/index.php?id=connect then try again. This can happen if not all the files were loaded properly, in which case they could be damaged/blocked/deleted by your antivirus.

- If the above doesn't work, try this. Change your DNS to 8.8.8.8 in you network config. It's free Google DNS. Our anti-bot software does not like some DNS servers. If your not sure how to do this click HERE. Then try logging in again.

- Many have reported that resetting their router also helps solve this. This is likely due to DNS issues which can also be resolved below a different way..

- Here are a list of programs known to cause this error and or cause problems running the game: nod32, mouse & keyboard macro software, Malwarebytes, HandyAndy (Android software emulator for PC) and more. So if you are using any of those try closing them then trying again, if it still don't work try turning off other programs you have running and try again.

- If everything else did not work. There may be some suspicious programs running on your computer and you should run a scan with your antivirus. Another reason is you could be using a botting program for l2 such as L2Tower, L2Walker etc, don't use them... they are illegal to use on our server. Once in a while we do have a false positive though with our ant-bot software and it thinks someone may be using a bot program when they are in fact not, so it will automatically ban you. If you think this may be the case with you, make sure you already tried everything above first, if the problem persists feel free to pm me here on the forums or email me at balls006@hotmail.com.

UPDATE (September 2016): Recently peoples antivirus programs have updated, and it now thinks some L2 files we have like gameguard.des are a Trojan (including windows defender). Please double check your antivirus if you all of a sudden started getting the protocol error, it likely quarantined or deleted your file, and due to that, you now get the protocol error. The solution for this is to make an exception for this file, or your l2 folder, and UN-quarantine this file, and/or re-install.
